What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK Government grant for property owners in England and Wales replacing fossil-fuel heating with a low-carbon heating system. Zing Energy is an MCS-certified air source heat pump installer serving Wales and the West, providing survey-led design, managed installation and support with the voucher application.

What support is available?

Your Questions, answered

Quick answers to the most common questions about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and heat pumps.

‘Air source heat pump’ is a broad term. On this page, “air source heat pump” refers to an air-to-water system, which transfers heat from the outside air into a wet central-heating and hot-water system.

The standard Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for an air source heat pump is £7,500. Until 31 March 2027, eligible properties currently heated by oil or LPG and without a mains-gas connection can receive an additional £1,500, taking the total grant to £9,000. Ofgem makes the final decision on eligibility.

No. Zing Energy can assess the property and manage the application, but Ofgem makes the final eligibility decision. The voucher must be approved before it can be relied upon.

A valid EPC is no longer mandatory for BUS applications properly made from 28 April 2026. Where there is no valid EPC, the installer must provide the alternative evidence required by the scheme.

Property age alone does not answer the question. Heat loss, insulation, emitters, hot-water demand, available space and electrical requirements all matter. Zing Energy uses a technical survey to establish what the property needs.

Some properties need larger radiators or other changes to deliver the required heat efficiently at lower water temperatures. The survey and design will identify any proposed emitter or enabling work before you decide whether to proceed.

The remaining cost depends on the property, system size, and any enabling work. Zing Energy provides a property-specific proposal and itemised quotation after the free survey rather than using a potentially misleading example price.

The initial property check and indicative estimate are free. If you choose to progress, the survey/design stage costs £180 inc. VAT. This is non-refundable but will be credited from the final price of an installation if you choose to go ahead with the project.

If you choose to proceed, Zing Energy’s compliance team applies through the Ofgem BUS Installer framework with the collected evidence and manages the application. Ofgem contacts the property owner directly for consent and may carry out further checks.

Many domestic air source heat pump installations in Wales can fall within permitted-development rules, but conditions apply to siting, size, boundaries, noise and the property itself. Listed buildings, conservation areas and unusual sites require individual checks.

Our customer experience team reviews your enquiry and aims to make the first contact attempt within on working hour, during our Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm opening hours.
We use your address and initial details to prepare an indicative estimate, normally on the same working day. Enquiries outside these hours are picked up the next working day. If you would like to progress after reviewing your estimate, we explain the £180 survey/design stage and arrange the next steps.

Zing Energy provides free initial property checks across Wales and parts of western England. We can assess the main eligibility indicators and whether an air source heat pump may be suitable, although Ofgem makes the final decision on grant eligibility. Check the official eligibility criteria.

Potentially, yes. Having a mains-gas connection means you cannot receive the temporary additional £1,500, but it does not by itself rule you out of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Eligible properties replacing an existing gas heating system may still qualify for the standard £7,500 grant.

We start with an indicative estimate showing the estimated installation cost, assumed BUS grant and estimated amount you would pay. The property survey and bespoke design establish your final specification and itemised quotation. The grant amount depends on your property meeting the applicable scheme conditions.
